Job summary

BIOVIA in Cambridge is seeking a backend/server-side specialist to design, implement, and scale RESTful APIs using Java and TypeScript within a cloud-first Materials Management service. You will contribute to a SaaS platform, delivering scalable backend features and secure, high-performance services.

The role emphasizes strong testing with JUnit, Mocha, or Jest, and requires a CS/STEM degree plus excellent English communication.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, STEM, or related discipline.
  • Experience building secure, backward-compatible RESTful APIs for large-scale SaaS environments.
  • Strong commercial backend experience in Java and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Experience with automated backend testing frameworks (JUnit, Mocha, or Jest).
  • Strong ownership, agile mindset, and English communication skills.
  • Familiarity with RDF/graph databases and SPARQL.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs in Java and modern JavaScript ecosystems.
  • Build new backend features for complex scientific workflows in a cloud-based SaaS environment.

Salary: £68,000 - 108,000 per year

Requirements:
  • We are looking for a dedicated backend or server-side specialist with strong commercial experience developing backend applications using Java and/or JavaScript / TypeScript.
  • We value full-stack adaptability, but our core focus is on building server-side logic and scalable APIs.
  • We are looking for experience building secure, backward-compatible, and high-performance RESTful APIs for large-scale SaaS environments.
  • We are looking for experience using automated backend testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mocha, or Jest.
  • We are looking for a degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
  • We are looking for a strong sense of ownership, an agile mindset, and excellent English communication skills.
  • We value experience working with RDF databases or graph databases and querying with SPARQL.
  • We value a passion or academic interest in materials science, chemistry, biology, or scientific informatics software.
  • We value experience or familiarity with client-side development such as Angular 21+ and RxJS to support full-stack collaboration when needed.
Responsibilities:
  • We are based in our Cambridge office and work as part of an agile team of experienced and dedicated software engineers contributing to the Materials Management service.
  • We design, implement, and maintain highly scalable backend services and APIs using Java and modern JavaScript ecosystems.
  • We build out a broad set of new backend features enabling complex scientific workflows in entirely new business areas.
  • We shape project roadmaps, ensuring deep test coverage and a highly maintainable, resilient codebase.
  • We proactively research and introduce cutting-edge backend tools, design patterns, and engineering practices to the team.
  • We enhance data processing pipelines, concurrency models, and multi-tenant capabilities for public and private cloud deployments.
  • We lead and participate in rigorous peer reviews, ensuring a clean, robust, and maintainable codebase.
