Job summary

RTL Group Ltd is seeking an experienced Site Manager to deliver a major railway infrastructure project, coordinating site teams to meet safety and programme requirements on a complex civil works site.

You will oversee drainage, earthworks, structures, trackside civils, and associated rail tasks, reading drawings and ensuring RAMS, permits and standards. Essential qualifications include PTS, CSCS, SMSTS, and a civil engineering qualification or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • Experience as Site Manager on railway, rail civils, infrastructure, or major civil engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Network Rail standards, safe systems of work, possessions, isolations, and trackside working requirements.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary site teams and subcontractors on complex rail infrastructure projects.
  • Good understanding of drainage, structures, earthworks, reinforced concrete, ducting, troughing, and associated railway civil engineering works.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction programmes.
  • Strong planning, leadership, communication, and organisational skills with the ability to deliver projects safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and project delivery processes is advantageous.
  • Excellent understanding of health & safety legislation and industry best practice within the rail sector.
  • Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification is essential.
  • Valid CSCS Card.
  • SMSTS qualification is essential.
  • First Aid at Work qualification is desirable.
  • COSS, SSSTS, or other rail competencies would be advantageous.
  • HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day to day delivery of rail and associated civil engineering works, ensuring all activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with programme requirements.
  • Oversee site operations including drainage, earthworks, structures, trackside civils, ducting, troughing, concrete works, and associated railway infrastructure activities.
  • Lead and coordinate Site Engineers, Foremen, operatives, subcontractors, and suppliers, promoting a collaborative and high-performing site environment.
  • Ensure all works are carried out in compliance with Network Rail standards, project specifications, drawings, RAMS, permits, and company procedures.
  • Plan and manage labour, plant, materials, access arrangements, and subcontractors to achieve project milestones and maintain productivity.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager, commercial team, designers, Network Rail representatives, and other stakeholders to resolve technical and operational issues.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks and opportunities, and implement mitigation measures to maintain programme and budget targets.
  • Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed throughout the project, carrying out regular inspections and ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Promote a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture, ensuring full compliance with company policies, Network Rail requirements, and current legislation.
  • Manage site documentation including shift reports, site diaries, inspection records, quality records, permits, and programme updates.
  • Support commercial activities by identifying variations, monitoring site costs, and contributing to project reporting and forecasting.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, briefings, and site coordination meetings, ensuring all personnel are fully briefed on planned works and safety requirements.
