Haywood & Padgett Ltd in Barnsley is recruiting a Site Bakery Engineer to provide electrical and maintenance support across the bakery and production lines. You will help ensure safe, efficient operations with planned and reactive maintenance and a strong focus on safety and compliance.

The role offers a 3 on/3 off rotating shift pattern (days and nights), with opportunities to mentor junior colleagues and collaborate with the Engineering Manager and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Experience in bakery/food manufacturing or FMCG environments.
• Strong electrical knowledge with practical experience.
• Experience in planned and reactive maintenance.
• Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
• Able to read electrical drawings and work with safety compliance.

Responsibilities

• Plan maintenance and drive continuous improvements of bakery equipment.
• Perform reactive maintenance and high-quality repairs.
• Ensure plant and equipment run safely and efficiently, minimising downtime.
• Record daily work sheets and maintain records.
• Assist with installing and commissioning new machinery.
• Source and manage spare parts and supplies.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience working within a bakery, food manufacturing, FMCG, or similar fast-paced production environment, where they have gained strong electrical and mechanical engineering skills.

The Role

As part of our ongoing expansion, we are seeking a Site Bakery Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for providing electrical and maintenance services to support the bakery, production lines, and related areas. Your work will help ensure smooth, safe, and efficient operations across the site.

Key Responsibilities

• Planned maintenance and continuous improvements of bakery equipment
• Reactive maintenance and excellent fault-finding skills, ensuring high-quality repairs
• Ensuring plant and equipment runs efficiently, smoothly, and safely, minimising downtime
• Complying with all health and safety legislation
• Completing daily work sheets and general record keeping
• Helping to install and commission new machinery
• Maintaining mechanical and electrical parts and spares, sourcing and ordering supplies
• Performing general repairs, including plumbing, painting, fitting, and finishing
• Mentoring junior colleagues
• Working closely with the Engineering Manager, other engineering colleagues, and essential departments
• Attending training and development courses, as appropriate

Requirements & Skills

• Experience working as an Engineer within a bakery, food manufacturing, FMCG, or similar production environment is highly desirable.
• Strong electrical knowledge and practical experience
• Experience in planned and reactive maintenance
• Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills
• Experience working as a mechanical/electrical engineer within an industrial setting (ex-Naval engineers or similar welcomed)
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, using own initiative
• Strong attention to safety and compliance
• Minimum Level 3 qualification in mechanical and/or electrical engineering (NVQ, City & Guilds, HND, or equivalent)
• Apprentice trained
• Ability to read electrical drawings
• Forklift truck licence preferred
• Basic food hygiene certificate desirable
• Fully conversant with Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a strong team player

Hours

This role follows a 3 on / 3 off rotating shift pattern, alternating between days and nights.

• Day shift: 7am - 7pm
• Night shift: 7pm- 7am
• Average of 40.25 hours per week

We're looking for someone who is flexible with working hours, as you may occasionally be required to:

• Join an on-call rota
• Provide cover for colleagues' planned or unplanned leave, including holidays and sickness
