Job summary

Network Rail is seeking a Signal Sighting Specialist to lead signal sighting activities and ensure safe, compliant delivery of renewal projects across the country. You will work with project teams to plan inspections, provide technical guidance, and maintain sighting records in line with industry standards.

The role requires strong signalling knowledge, a focus on safety and continuous improvement, and the ability to influence standards and drive best practice across major and minor works.

Qualifications

• Working towards an HNC/HND or equivalent industry-recognised qualification.
• Extensive experience in signalling scheme design or sighting.
• Holder of Sentinel Signal Sighting Competency as Committee Chair.

Responsibilities

• Plan and undertake signal sighting inspections and assessments.
• Provide expert technical advice on signalling projects.

About The Role

• Duration: Permanent
• Location: Any of the signalling design offices - London Waterloo, Reading, Birmingham, Glasgow or York. This role is a full-time opportunity, flexible working patterns will be considered.
• Band & Salary: Band 4.C £43,588 - £53,167 depending on skills and experience. Please note an inner London or London allowance would be in addition to the stated salary where applicable.

About The Team

Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.

As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.

About The Role

We are looking for a Signal Sighting Specialist to play a key role in the safe and effective delivery of signalling renewal and enhancement projects across the country. Working closely with project teams and operational stakeholders, you will lead and coordinate signal sighting activities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and Network Rail requirements while supporting the safe operation of the railway.

You'll plan and undertake signal sighting inspections and assessments, provide expert technical advice on signalling projects, and help ensure that signal sighting records and processes are managed effectively. The role also involves reviewing and implementing new standards, supporting operational risk reduction activities, and promoting best practice across projects and minor works.

Personal Track Safety (PTS) is a set of safety regulations and procedures that individuals must adhere to when working on or near the tracks of the UK rail network.

Drugs And Alcohol Standard

For some of our roles all prospective external candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
