Job summary

Carmichael UK is seeking an experienced Setting Out Engineer for a long-term freelance role in the North East. You will join a major civils and infrastructure contractor on a flagship energy decarbonisation project and contribute to accurate setting out of reinforced concrete structures.

You will be responsible for surveying, record-keeping, QA inspections, and coordinating with site teams to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications.

Qualifications

• Experience as Setting Out Engineer on major civil or infra projects.
• Strong background in reinforced concrete structures.
• Competent with Leica, Trimble or equivalent survey equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• CSCS Card is required; SMSTS/SSSTS beneficial.
• Full UK driving licence preferred.

Responsibilities

• Setting out and surveying for reinforced concrete structures.
• Accurately setting out bases, beams, walls, plinths and formwork.
• Supporting construction teams to ensure works align with drawings and specs.
• Producing and maintaining setting out records.
• Carrying out QA inspections and as-built surveys.
• Working closely with Site Engineers, Sub Agents and Project Engineers.
• Ensuring works meet quality and health & safety standards.
• Managing survey equipment and calibration records.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Setting Out Engineer looking for a long-term freelance assignment on a major UK infrastructure project.

Setting Out Engineer

Location: North East

Contract: Freelance

Status: Outside IR35

Setting Out Engineer currently required to join a major civils and infrastructure contractor delivering works on a large civils project in the North East. This role offers the opportunity to work on significant reinforced concrete structures as part of one of the UK's most important energy and decarbonisation schemes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Setting out and surveying for reinforced concrete structures.
• Accurately setting out bases, beams, walls, plinths and associated civil engineering works.
• Supporting construction teams to ensure works are delivered in accordance with design drawings and specifications.
• Producing and maintaining setting out records.
• Carrying out quality assurance inspections and as-built surveys.
• Working closely with Site Engineers, Sub Agents and Project Engineers.
• Ensuring all works are completed in line with project quality and health & safety standards.
• Assisting with dimensional control of formwork and reinforced concrete activities.
• Managing survey equipment and maintaining calibration records.

Requirements:

• Previous experience as a Setting Out Engineer on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
• Strong background in reinforced concrete structures.
