Job summary

The National Trust is seeking a Senior Visitor Experience Officer for Birmingham Back to Backs. You will lead engaging activity programmes, curate exhibition spaces, and build partnerships to widen access to heritage and nature.

Based at Birmingham Back to Backs with travel to local sites, you will supervise volunteers and support day-to-day operations while delivering high standards of customer service in a busy heritage setting.

Qualifications

• Experience in creating and delivering activities and experiences that engage people.
• Ability to build positive relationships and work with diverse partners.
• Experience in developing and/or curating exhibitions.
• Confident interpreting heritage and stories for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Report to the Property Experience Curator and work with staff and volunteers across visitor welcome, community engagement, house and collections.
• Create and deliver a dynamic programme of events, activities and exhibitions on and off site.
• Manage exhibition spaces and develop partnerships for partner‑led exhibitions.
• Support day‑to‑day property operations, including budgets and income targets.
• Act as Duty Manager on weekends and some evenings, handling emergencies and visitor questions.

You'll manage our temporary exhibition spaces, delivering a high-quality programme of changing exhibitions that enhance the visitor experience. You'll also develop memorable experiences for children and young people, people from global majority communities, and those on lower incomes.

What it's like to work here

Although you'll be based at Birmingham Back to Backs, you'll work across our West Birmingham, Wolverhampton & Black Country portfolio, collaborating with colleagues at properties including Clent Hills, Moseley Old Hall and Wightwick Manor & Gardens. Regular travel to other sites and occasional off-site work will be required.

Birmingham Back to Backs is a busy and thriving court of historic houses, sharing the stories of working people who lived and worked there from the 1840s through to the 1970s. Alongside our guided tours, our exhibition spaces tell wider stories of Birmingham and the surrounding region.

You'll be part of a passionate team committed to connecting people with heritage and nature through meaningful and inclusive experiences. We're open six days a week, so weekend, evening and bank holiday working is an important part of the role. As a new portfolio of properties, teamwork and collaboration across sites are essential.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Property Experience Curator, you'll work closely with staff and volunteers across visitor welcome, community engagement, house and collections, and the wider Visitor Experience team.

You'll create and deliver a dynamic programme of events, activities and exhibitions both on and off site. You'll manage our exhibition spaces, develop partnerships that enable others to create and lead exhibitions, and play a key role in establishing a regular programme of partner‑led exhibitions. You'll be curious, open to new ideas and passionate about reaching new audiences.

You'll also support the day-to-day operation of the property, maintaining high standards during projects, events, active conservation work, school holidays and busy periods throughout the year. You'll work with internal and external stakeholders, manage budgets, monitor expenditure and help deliver against income targets.

You'll regularly act as Duty Manager for the site, working weekends (approximately 1 in 5), bank holidays and occasional evenings. As Duty Manager, you'll be the main point of contact for staff, volunteers and visitors in the event of emergencies, enquiries or complaints, and may supervise volunteers and others as required.

• confident interpreting heritage, collections and stories that are relevant for diverse audiences
• well organised and able to manage multiple priorities in a busy environment
• comfortable dealing with a variety of situations and adapting your approach when needed
• committed to delivering high standards of customer service
• experienced in working with and supervising volunteers
