Summary

People who work for the National Trust are as varied as all the places we care for. That's why we look for staff from all backgrounds, with a variety of skills and abilities, to help the Trust’s cause. As a Communications and Marketing Officer for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, and Brimham Rocks, you'll be responsible for letting people know about the place, and how they can visit.

What it's like to work here

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is one of 1273 sites globally recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Nidderdale National Landscape, and close to the city of Ripon, the estate is iconic in the North of England. This is a unique place made of two moments in history. Where medieval strength blends with 18th century eccentricity to create a landscape full of secrets, curiosities and breathtaking views.

The River Skell winds its way through an 800- acre estate of contrasts and surprises. The abbey ruins tell the story of 400 years of monastic life, years of riches, ruin and revival, brought to a close by the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Studley Royal Water Garden, with its elegant canals, follies and eye-catchers was the height of fashion in Georgian times, with the designers cleverly incorporating the abbey ruins into their grand vision.

Together with a deer park, Cistercian Mill, Victorian Church and an Elizabethan style manor house it’s clear why the estate is one of the most popular National Trust places to visit.

Brimham Rocks is a place of natural spectacle. Giant rock formations, sculpted by 320 years of movement of entire continents as well as hundreds of thousands of years of ice, rain and wind, have taken on weird and wonderful shapes. Brimham Rocks and its heather moorland are both Sites of Special Scientific Interest and are a magnet for geologists, naturalists, climbers, and walkers as well as families who love the freedom to explore this amazing place.

Providing a great visitor experience and looking after these special places is at the heart of what we do, and we’re passionate about getting the details right. Whether you’re giving our visitors a warm welcome, caring for our buildings or collections or improving conditions for wildlife, every contribution ensures that nature, beauty and history continues to thrive at this special place.

What you'll be doing

We have an annual plan covering communications and marketing for both sites, and your role from will be to achieve what’s on that plan. We have some ambitious targets that you’ll be aiming at, including reaching new and diverse audiences, so there’s room for creativity and fresh ideas.

Your day-to-day work will cover things like creating new content on our web pages, and making sure that existing information remains relevant and accurate, running social media accounts, creating promotional materials and writing and distributing press releases.

You'll be working closely with your colleagues on site and the Trusts regional advisers, known as Specialist Delivery Partners. You'll be part of a team making sure that we're sharing the best stories we can, with a focus on spreading the word about places to visit and letting people know about the Trust’s conservation work.
