Peterborough City Council is recruiting a Senior Vision Rehabilitation Specialist to join the Adult Social Care Therapy Services team. You will manage a complex caseload, deliver rehabilitation programmes, and provide low vision advice in people’s homes and communities.

A driving licence and access to a car are essential. You will lead and support junior staff, contribute to service development, and work closely with health, housing and voluntary sector partners to improve outcomes for people

All about the Role

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Vision Rehabilitation Specialist to join our Adult Social Care Therapy Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to take a lead role in supporting people with visual impairment, hearing impairment or dual sensory loss to:

• maximise independence, safety and confidence
• improve quality of life
• access practical, person-centred support within their home and community.

In this role, you will:

• manage a complex caseload and complete specialist assessments
• develop, deliver and review rehabilitation programmes
• provide daily living skills training, mobility training, communication support, low vision advice and equipment provision
• contribute to Care Act assessments, risk management and safeguarding practice
• make recommendations relating to housing adaptations and work closely with health, social care, housing and voluntary sector partners.

You will also provide leadership within the sensory service by:

• supporting junior staff, students and colleagues
• promoting best practice and reflective learning
• contributing to service development
• identifying opportunities to improve outcomes for people with sight loss.

Therapy Services sits within Adult Social Care and supports people to live as independently as possible in their own homes and communities. The team works with adults, families, carers and partner agencies to:

• reduce, prevent or delay the need for more intensive support
• support safe and sustainable independence
• help avoid hospital admissions and long-term care where possible.

You will be part of a supportive and knowledgeable service, working alongside:

• Therapy Services and Reablement colleagues
• Social Work teams
• Care & Repair and housing partners
• NHS services and voluntary sector organisations.

The sensory service provides specialist advice, assessment and rehabilitation for people with visual impairment, hearing impairment and dual sensory loss. We have a strong focus on:

• enablement and inclusion
• practical outcomes for residents
• reflective practice and professional development
• partnership working and continuous improvement.

All about You

You will be a qualified Vision Rehabilitation Specialist, Rehabilitation Officer or equivalent. You will have:

• a Degree, Diploma of Higher Education, Foundation Degree in Rehabilitation Studies (Visual Impairment), or an equivalent relevant qualification
• experience of working with people with visual impairment
• experience of delivering specialist rehabilitation programmes in community settings.

You will bring:

• strong assessment, planning and problem-solving skills
• the ability to manage complex needs and balance risk with independence
• sound professional judgement and confident decision-making
• the ability to support people with the practical, emotional and social impact of sight loss
• sensitive and effective communication skills with individuals, families, carers and professionals.

You will also need:

• a good understanding of the Care Act 2014, safeguarding, equality and diversity
• knowledge of the National Occupational Standards for Specialist Sensory Workers
• strong organisational skills and accurate record keeping
• a reflective, proactive approach to practice
• the ability to work independently, contribute positively to team working, and support the learning and development of others.

Please note this role is working in the community, therefore it is essential you hold a valid driving license and have access to a car available for work.
