Job summary

Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is seeking a Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Officer to support residents with sensory loss, building confidence and independence through needs-led assessments and tailored rehabilitation across the borough.

You will deliver practical mobility and orientation training, provide low vision support, and collaborate with health and housing partners to ensure comprehensive care while following safeguarding procedures.

Qualifications

• Diploma of Higher Education in Rehabilitation Studies or an equivalent qualification.

Job description

Support residents with sensory loss to rebuild confidence, develop practical skills and live independently

As a Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Officer, you’ll support residents with sensory impairments to build practical skills, confidence, and independence within their local communities every day.

What you’ll be doing

Your focus will be carrying out needs-led assessments and delivering tailored rehabilitation programmes across the borough for residents of all ages living with visual, hearing, or dual sensory impairments. Your work will center on practical daily living skills, mobility and orientation training, and low vision support, enabling residents to navigate their environments safely and retain their autonomy.

This means providing specialist advice on accessible communication methods, ordering essential equipment within allocated budgets, educating around technology accessibility features, and signposting to relevant sensory services.

You’ll work closely with families, health professionals, housing teams, and voluntary sector partners to coordinate joint assessments and chair network meetings to ensure comprehensive care. You’ll also act as a trusted adviser to promote accessible environments across public and residential venues, contribute to service development projects, and maintain accurate records within Council IT systems. Operating under statutory frameworks including the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding procedures, you’ll balance resident choice with safety to achieve positive outcomes.

What you’ll bring

You hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Rehabilitation Studies, an FdSc in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment), or an equivalent recognised qualification. You’ll bring hands-on experience working directly with people with visual and hearing impairments, carrying out needs-led assessments, and delivering practical mobility and orientation training.

You’re deeply familiar with low vision services, dual sensory loss, and relevant statutory legislation including the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding procedures.

You’re organised and proactive, with strong problem-solving, risk management, and record-keeping skills, as well as the confidence to manage a varied caseload autonomously.

Position and Interview Details

This role will require the successful applicant to undertake an enhanced DBS with Adults barred list. Interviews will take place W/C 21st September 2026.

Working Style:

You’ll be based in the Borough for 3 days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you’re conducting home assessments, training residents on local routes, or collaborating with partner agencies, you’ll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.
