Job summary

Background

The Senior Technician plays a key role in supporting innovative teaching and learning across Nursing and Midwifery programmes within the School of Health and Medical Sciences. Responsible for the setup, maintenance and operation of clinical skills, simulation and laboratory equipment, the postholder ensures teaching spaces are safe, well-prepared and fully functional. Working closely with academic staff, students and technical colleagues, they provide expert technical support, contribute to simulation activities, supervise technicians, and help deliver an outstanding student experience through high-quality technical services.

Responsibilities

Lead the day-to-day operation of clinical skills, simulation and high-fidelity simulation facilities, ensuring equipment, teaching spaces and resources are prepared, maintained and operated safely. Provide technical support and guidance to students and academic staff, configure and support high-fidelity simulation scenarios, and troubleshoot equipment issues. Supervise and support technicians, manage stock and maintenance records, and contribute to service improvements. Work collaboratively across teams to deliver high-quality practical and simulation-based learning experiences while ensuring compliance with health, safety and regulatory requirements.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have excellent technical and organisational skills, with experience supporting simulation, high-fidelity simulation or specialist equipment in a practical learning environment. They will be an effective communicator who can build positive relationships with students, staff and stakeholders while delivering a high standard of customer service. The ability to troubleshoot technical problems, work independently, manage competing priorities and lead a small team is essential. Experience within Nursing, Midwifery, clinical skills, simulation or higher education settings would be advantageous.
