IonQ, Inc. is seeking a hands‑on Staff Software Engineer for the Oxford Ionics team. You will develop and operate the software that controls quantum hardware, focusing on non‑realtime controllers and ensuring high reliability in a hybrid work environment.

You’ll collaborate with software, systems, and quantum scientists to build robust control software and tooling. This role emphasizes staying hands‑on with code, tackling challenging hardware integrations, and driving framework improvements

Qualifications

• Deep systems engineering experience with shipping and operating reliable services.
• Hands-on coding in a Rust-based environment, not purely managerial.
• Experience with async programming and modern networked services.
• Familiarity with gRPC/REST, observability, and failure modes in production.
• Knowledge of hardware protocols like SCPI, Modbus, serial, Ethernet.
• Ability to prioritise work with critical vs urgent items and strong communication.

Responsabilités

• Take on demanding device integrations and diagnose issues with real hardware in a live lab.
• Eliminate classes of failure across the fleet rather than patching individual instances.
• Improve the shared framework and bring controllers along with changes.
• Build tooling, simulators and test infrastructure to accelerate the team.
• Evolve deployment and operations to keep the fleet observable and reliable.
• Influence others through code quality and constructive reviews.
