Job summary

WSP seeks a System Safety Engineer to provide system safety support on large, complex rail projects in the UK, reporting to the SEIA group. You will work on hazard analysis, safety plans and risk assessments, guiding design teams and clients.

Based in our UK offices (London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham) with hybrid working, this role offers mentorship from a senior team, Chartership development and a path to delivering safe, reliable rail solutions.

Qualifications

• Degree in a technical engineering discipline or extensive relevant experience.
• Relevant postgraduate experience in system safety engineering (rail desirable).
• Corporate membership with a professional institution (e.g. SaRS, IET, IMechE).
• Professional registration or working towards registration as Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
• Familiarity with Engineering Safety Management (iESM or Yellow Book).
• Knowledge of CSM-RA Regulation on UK rail projects.
• Knowledge/background in mainline or metro railway discipline (signalling, telecoms, E&P).

Responsibilities

• Provide system safety support and guidance to clients on large, complex projects under senior team supervision.
• Lead on smaller projects, planning, supporting, and chairing Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment workshops.
• Prepare System Definitions, Safety Plans, Hazard Records and Safety Justification Reports demonstrating CSM-RA application.
• Develop designs, technical standards, specifications and requirements for rail projects in collaboration with clients and internal teams.
• Act as Project Manager for smaller projects with support from our senior team.
