Job summary

WSP is seeking a System Safety Engineer to support and guide safety activities on large UK rail projects. The role collaborates with clients and internal teams to shape designs and safety plans within a senior mentorship structure.

Based in the UK with hybrid work options, the successful candidate will bring rail safety knowledge, professional registration, and a proactive approach to project management on smaller programs.

Qualifications

• Degree in a technical engineering discipline or extensive relevant experience.
• Post-graduate experience in system safety engineering (rail desirable).
• Corporate membership with SaRS, IET, or IMechE.
• Professional registration or working towards registration as Incorporate/Chartered Engineer.
• Familiarity with Engineering Safety Management (iESM or Yellow Book).
• Knowledge of CSM-RA Regulation on UK rail projects.
• Background in a mainline or metro railway discipline (signalling, telecoms, E&P).

Responsibilities

• Provide system safety support and guidance to clients on large, complex projects under senior team guidance.
• Take a leading role on smaller projects, including chairing Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment workshops.
• Prepare System Definitions, Safety Plans, Hazard Records and Safety Justification Reports; apply CSM-RA to rail projects.
• Collaborate with clients and internal teams to develop designs, standards, specifications and requirements for rail projects.
• Act as Project Manager for smaller projects with senior team support.
