Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse to join our friendly haemato-oncology ward at St George's Hospital, on a full-time fixed term basis. The ward cares for patients with a variety of haematological disorders and oncological conditions. The department works with a team of specialist consultants and nurses who collectively provide a comprehensive service covering diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care. The haematology-oncology department comprises Gordon Smith Ward, Ruth Myles Ward and Trevor Howell Ward. A haematology day care unit is attached to Ruth Myles Ward and a chemotherapy suite attached to Trevor Howell Ward. A CNS team supports blood cancers, solid tumours and bleeding disorders, and a research team conducts trials. We strive to deliver the highest quality of care to all patients, always putting the patient first.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the ward and work under your own initiative, prioritising workload to provide safe nursing care.
• Support the senior sister and act as a role model for junior team members.
• Develop management skills through audits and the management of a small team of staff.
• Plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients, drawing up care in conjunction with the shift co-ordinator.
• Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the treatment modalities administered within the unit.
• Develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of shift management and confident leadership.

Qualifications

• Recognised chemotherapy qualification with a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience, including at least 1 year in cancer care.
• Strong leadership and organisational skills; motivated to support the senior sister and mentor junior staff.
