Job summary

NMI is hiring a remote Senior Software Engineer in the UK to join our Reliability Engineering team. You will design and build platform reliability frameworks, tooling, and guardrails to improve uptime and operability across critical services.

We seek 6+ years in production software, strong PHP backend experience, and cloud deployment expertise (AWS). The role emphasizes technical leadership, ownership, and collaboration within a remote-first culture and competitive rewards.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience building and operating production-grade software systems in complex environments.
• Strong experience developing backend services in PHP, with the ability to learn new languages and codebases quickly.
• Proven experience building reliable, scalable, and highly available systems.
• Experience designing or contributing to platform-level reliability solutions (observability tooling, alerting strategies, etc).
• Solid understanding of distributed system fundamentals, latency, capacity, and graceful degradation.
• Experience improving operational practices including incident response and post-incident reviews.
• Hands-on experience deploying services in cloud environments (AWS).
• Familiarity with secure, compliance-aware development practices (PCI, SOC 2, OWASP).
• Ability to influence technical direction through clear communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Design and build reliability-focused frameworks, tooling, and standards to improve uptime, performance, and operational confidence.
• Drive proactive reliability initiatives, prevention, detection, and fast recovery.
• Partner with engineering teams to embed reliability into design, development, and deployment workflows.
• Establish and evolve observability practices with metrics, logging, alerting, and dashboards.
• Identify systemic risks and lead efforts to address them via automation and architectural improvements.
• Contribute hands-on to production codebases and internal tools with a focus on maintainability.
• Mentor engineers and participate in design reviews and technical proposals.
