Job summary

SMG in London is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to anchor the Plan-Apps squad. The role is hands-on and deeply rooted in code, shaping architectural direction and engineering standards across the team.

This role owns feature design, mentors engineers, and helps stand up new services in a data-centric, service-oriented platform, balancing delivery with long-term quality and cost considerations.

Qualifications

• Senior hands-on experience delivering at senior level, owning features from design through to production.
• Demonstrable experience defining technical architecture for non-trivial features and articulating trade-offs.
• Experience mentoring, coaching, review culture, or leading a project team.
• Experience with NoSQL databases (ideally MongoDB) and relational data.
• Strong cloud infrastructure experience: designing, deploying and optimizing.
• Experience with containers, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).
• Strong security and performance considerations in production web apps.

Responsibilities

• Design and stand up new services, setting boundaries and data ownership.
• Define code architecture for new features and own end-to-end delivery.
• Make and justify technical decisions with long-term cost in mind.
• Break down ambiguous problems into deliverable work for the squad.
• Contribute to shared libraries and reusable components.
• Coach and guide less experienced engineers through review and pairing.
• Provide technical leadership across projects and coordinate engineering effort.
• Contribute to hiring via technical interviews.
• Maintain and optimise cloud infrastructure for reliability, security, and cost.
• Build and improve CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
• Drive improvements to code quality and developer experience.
• Provide input into requirements and tickets with feasibility and risk.
