Job summary

TÜV Rheinland Solutions Rail Division in Derby seeks a Principal Engineer Consultant to lead rolling stock consultancy projects and manage client relationships with technical and financial accountability.

You will deliver high-quality technical outputs, mentor junior staff, and help shape the business through active client engagement and strategy input, operating with a hybrid UK-focused model.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Engineer status (IMechE or IET).
• 10–15 years of experience in the rail industry.
• Extensive experience in rolling stock engineering, including consultancy services.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, commercial awareness, and professionalism.

Responsibilities

• Develop proposals and undertake account management to grow client relationships.
• Provide technical leadership, oversight and support for junior team members.
• Quality checking and approval of outputs to maintain high standards.
• Manage projects, budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
• Deliver consultancy services that add value and meet client needs.
• Contribute to strategy and tactics with industry experience and knowledge.
• Engage with clients to build and maintain the order book for the business.
• Represent TÜV Rheinland at industry events and committees as required.
