Job summary

IonQ in the UK is seeking a Senior Quantum Scientist to join the UK Science team in Oxford, with the option to work remotely a few days per week. You will validate and optimise performance of our quantum computers and design, code, and run experiments on trapped‑ion qubits.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics or related field and a strong background in quantum control, calibration, and benchmarking. Collaborative, publication-minded scientists are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

• To be successful in this role, you will have a PhD in physics or a related discipline with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit‑related physics.
• Solid background in quantum control and hands‑on calibration/benchmarking of qubits is desirable.
• Strong programming/data analysis skills, e.g., Python or Rust, and collaborative skills.

Responsibilities

• Prototyping and characterising control schemes for trapped‑ion qubits.
• Calibrating and benchmarking quantum systems to maximise fidelities.
• Validating trap technologies including electronics and photonics for large architectures.
• Analysing data, debugging hardware/software interactions, ensuring qubit reliability.
