Job summary

UKRI International seeks a Senior Quantum Applications Engineer at the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire. You will lead research and development of quantum computing applications, mentoring staff and shaping collaborations with government, industry and academia.

The role requires a PhD in quantum computing or related field, strong Python and SDK experience (Qiskit, Cirq), and a track record of publishable research in quantum

Qualifications

• PhD level in quantum computing, quantum information, or closely related field.
• Proven track record of research with peer‑reviewed publications.
• Experience delivering technical work and collaborations in quantum computing.
• Experience with quantum algorithms in simulation, optimisation and/or ML.
• Strong Python programming and SDK usage (Qiskit, Cirq).

Responsibilities

• Lead technical work to support the team’s objectives.
• Develop and test quantum algorithms; program quantum computers with SDKs.
• Collaborate with experts to enable practical applications.
• Identify use-cases in priority sectors (life sciences, healthcare, finance, energy, transport).
• Analyse quantum advantage using classical benchmarks.
• Lead projects with internal and external partners.
• Apply agile and software engineering practices.
• Publish non-confidential results in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Keep up-to-date with advances in quantum computing.
• Support the UK’s quantum mission and strategic objectives.
