Job summary

UKRI's National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) at Harwell seeks a Senior Quantum Applications Engineer to lead the development of practical quantum solutions. You will drive identification, development, and validation of high-impact use cases, shaping research directions across quantum algorithms, software, and hardware.

Qualifications

• Educated to PhD level (or equivalent work experience) in quantum computing, quantum information, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrable track record of research in quantum computing (or related field), including peer‑reviewed publications.
• Experience delivering technical work and collaborative projects in quantum computing with knowledge of emulation, implementation of algorithms and execution of quantum circuits.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical work and research to support the team’s objectives.
• Utilise and tailor quantum algorithms; build models and code; program quantum computers using SDKs and environments.
• Collaborate with experts to underpin and enable useful applications in priority sectors.
• Identify suitable problem types and develop use-cases for quantum computing including life sciences and finance.
• Analyse quantum advantage for practical problems and benchmark against classical techniques.
• Lead reporting and communicate findings, including publishing non‑confidential results.
