Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is hiring a Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function on major building projects in the South West. Based in Southampton, you will drive financial delivery, manage risk, and mentor the commercial team across portfolio projects.

You will oversee cost planning, valuations, and final accounts while defining procurement strategy with senior stakeholders. A senior leadership role offering substantial autonomy and strategic impact.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience delivering complex construction projects within a Tier 1 or major contractor environment.
• Strong leadership experience, including managing and developing commercial teams
• In-depth knowledge of standard forms of contract and construction commercial processes
• Strong financial and commercial acumen, with a proven track record of protecting margin
• Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment
• Professional membership (e.g. RICS) is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead the commercial management of major projects or a portfolio of schemes, ensuring financial success
• Oversee cost planning, forecasting, valuations, variations, and final account negotiations
• Provide leadership and mentoring to the commercial team, supporting development and performance
• Drive procurement strategy and subcontractor management to achieve best value and risk mitigation
• Work closely with senior stakeholders to influence commercial strategy and project outcomes
