Job summary

Mesa Quantum UK is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical, thermal, and packaging design of chip-scale atomic devices, including clocks, magnetometers, and gyroscopes. You will own decisions from concept through prototype to production, collaborating with US and UK teams.

Candidates from mechanical engineering, physics, or precision instrumentation with hands-on build and test experience will fit.

Qualifications

• At least 6 years designing precision mechanical hardware, including at least one design from prototype to production.
• Expert 3D CAD skills and production-quality drawings with GD&T.
• Thermal and structural finite element analysis correlated to test data.
• Experience designing small hardware where millimeters and milliwatts matter.
• Experience with vacuum or hermetic packaging: sealing, leak testing, outgassing control.

Responsibilities

• Build thermal models that predict heater power and temperature gradients; own mechanical and thermal design from concept to production.
• Design magnetic shielding and field control for each device type.
• Design hermetic and vacuum packages and verify with leak testing and outgassing controls.
• Run structural, modal, vibration, and shock analyses for environmental testing.
• Own tolerance stacks and optical alignment for laser, optics, vapor cell and detector with GD&T drawings.
• Design and build test fixtures, assembly tooling and environmental test setups.
• Drive design for manufacture with UK machining, packaging and photonics suppliers; support volume transfer.
• Collaborate across Mesa's UK and US teams to standardize mechanical design approaches.
• Establish design standards and configuration control for the UK team.
• Collaborate with academic/government partners on joint development and testing.
