Job summary

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Bedfordshire is seeking a senior midwifery manager to lead the maternity unit, ensure safe staffing and efficient patient flow across sites. The post involves managing rosters, redeploying staff between maternity and gynaecology, and leading escalation processes to maintain high-quality care at all hours.

Registered midwife with degree or master's qualification required.

Qualifications

• Registered midwife with a degree or master's qualification.
• Post-registration experience at band 6 or above.
• Extensive clinical experience and knowledge of inpatient pathways.
• Evidence of management or leadership skills and autonomous practice.
• Evidence of continued professional development.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical and operational midwifery leadership on the maternity unit, including out of hours.
• Redeploy staff across maternity and gynaecology to meet service needs.
• Roaster writing to achieve a safe skill mix across inpatient areas.
• Manage bed capacity and patient flow.
• Escalate admission, discharge, safeguarding and flow issues to the on-call midwifery manager or specialist teams.
• Coordinate patient transfers to other hospitals during escalation.
• Report staffing levels and quality issues at site safety meetings and to the Trust operations centre.
• Develop working relationships with on-call staff to coordinate patient flow at weekends.
• Apply the maternity and Trust escalation policy to minimise bed crises.
• Provide clinical support during escalation to maintain safety.
