Job summary

M-Sport UK is seeking an experienced Senior Machinist for our Machine Shop at Dovenby Hall. You will set, program and operate CNC machines to produce high-precision motorsport components and interpret complex drawings.

You will work with Engineering, Design, Workshop and Quality Control to ensure parts meet exacting standards, while mentoring apprentices and maintaining strict housekeeping and safety practices.

Qualifications

  • Educated to Level 3 Machining Technician standard.
  • Strong knowledge of precision machining principles, CNC operation, tooling.
  • Experience setting and operating CNC machining equipment in a precision engineering environment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, tolerances and technical specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail with focus on accuracy and repeatability.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment for inspection.
  • Proactive problem solving and ability to resolve machining issues.
  • Good verbal and written communication and teamwork.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Awareness of workshop health and safety practices.
  • IT skills including Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Set and operate CNC machinery to manufacture high-precision components in accordance with drawings.
  • Prepare machines, tooling, work holding and materials for production.
  • Make programme adjustments, tool offsets and corrections to maintain accuracy.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information.
  • Ensure machining work meets quality standards and procedures.
  • Inspect components at stages using measuring equipment for dimensional accuracy.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced Machinists and apprentices.
  • Complete job cards, inspection records and paperwork accurately.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Design, Workshop and QA to deliver on time.
  • Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, efficiency and practices.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards and safe working conditions.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Operating at the highest levels of international motorsport, M-Sport UK delivers programmes across the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally-Raid, and a variety of global customer racing activities. We are looking to recruit an experienced and motivated Senior Machinist to join our busy Machine Shop Department at our Dovenby Hall headquarters.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the manufacture and delivery of high-performance competition components, working as part of a skilled team of Machinists. Working closely with Engineering, Design, Workshop, Quality Control and other technical departments, you will ensure components are manufactured to the highest standards of quality, accuracy and reliability.

The role responsibilities include:
  • CNC Machining:Set and operate CNC machinery to manufacture high-precision components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Machine Setup:Prepare machines, tooling, work holding and materials to ensure efficient and accurate production.

  • Programming & Offsetting:Make appropriate programme adjustments, tool offsets and corrections to maintain component quality and dimensional accuracy.

  • Technical Drawings:Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information to accurately manufacture components.

  • Quality & Standards:Ensure all machining work is completed to the required quality standards, specifications and procedures, maintaining a strong focus on accuracy and repeatability.

  • Inspection & Verification:Inspect components at appropriate stages of manufacture using relevant measuring equipment to ensure dimensional accuracy and quality.

  • Technical Support:Provide technical support and guidance to less experienced Machinists, Apprentices and new starters in the Machine Shop.

  • Documentation:Complete relevant job cards, inspection records and technical paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration:Work closely with Engineering, Design, Workshop, Quality Control and other technical departments to ensure projects are delivered on time.

  • Continuous Improvement:Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, efficiency, quality and working practices.

  • General Workshop Duties:Maintain high housekeeping standards and ensure machines, tooling, equipment and work areas are kept in a clean, safe and effective condition.

Essential Criteria & Skills:
  • Education:Educated to Level 3 Machining Technician standard.

  • Machining Knowledge:Strong knowledge of precision machining principles, CNC machine operation, tooling and component manufacture.

  • CNC Experience:Proven experience setting and operating CNC machining equipment within a precision engineering environment.

  • Technical Drawings:Ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, tolerances and technical specifications.

  • Quality & Attention to Detail:Exceptional attention to detail with a strong understanding of the importance of accuracy, repeatability and quality.

  • Inspection & Measurement:Competent using a range of precision measuring equipment to inspect components against required specifications.

  • Problem Solving:A proactive approach with strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve machining and production issues.

  • Communication Skills:Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Organisation:Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage workloads and meet agreed deadlines.

  • Safety Awareness:Good understanding of workshop health and safety requirements and safe working practices.

  • IT Literacy:Competent using Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Experience:
  • Previous experience working within a high-performance, precision or motorsport engineering environment.

  • Experienced working within CNC milling and/or turning equipment.

  • Experienced machining complex, low-volume, high-precision components.

  • Previous experience supporting or mentoring other Machinist within a technical or production environment.
