Job summary

M-Sport UK, based at Dovenby Hall, seeks a Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical) to lead high-performance mechanical design across world-class motorsport programmes. You will own design concepts through manufacture, assemblies and validation in a multidisciplinary team.

You will mentor juniors, drive CAD developments, ensure rigorous documentation and leverage GD&T knowledge to optimise performance, durability and manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • Engineering qualification: BEng or MEng in Motorsport Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Significant mechanical design experience in high-performance engineering environments.
  • Experience taking technical ownership of projects and guiding other engineers.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills with ability to produce detailed drawings and BOMs.
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis and design for manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of complex mechanical components, systems and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
  • Provide engineering guidance, mentorship and technical ownership across allocated projects.
  • Produce and manage drawings, BOMs and technical documentation to company standards.
  • Drive concept development, evaluation and robust solutions to challenging technical problems.
  • Carry out engineering calculations, tolerance analyses and design reviews to validate performance and durability.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Operating at the highest levels of international motorsport, M-Sport UK delivers programmes across the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally Raid and a variety of global customer racing activities. We have an exciting opportunity to recruit for an experienced and motivated Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical) to join our Design team at our Dovenby Hall headquarters.

This role offers the opportunity to take a leading role in the design, development and continuous improvement of high-performance mechanical systems and components used across our world-class motorsport programmes. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of innovative engineering solutions from concept through to manufacture, assembly and validation.

The role responsibilities include:
  • Mechanical Design & Development:Lead the design and development of complex mechanical components, systems and assemblies using 3D CAD software.

  • Technical Leadership:Take technical ownership of allocated projects and provide engineering guidance, support and mentoring to Junior and Design Engineers within the team.

  • CAD & Technical Documentation:Produce, review and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs and supporting technical documentation to company standards

  • Concept Development:Lead the generation and evaluation of innovative engineering concepts, developing robust solutions to complex technical challenges.

  • Engineering Analysis:Carry out and oversee engineering calculations, tolerance stack-ups and design reviews to validate component performance, functionality and durability.

  • Design Validation:Support prototype manufacture, testing and development programmes, analysing results and implementing design improvements based on test and operational feedback.

  • Engineering Change Control:Manage engineering changes throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring accurate documentation and effective configuration control.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:Work closely with manufacturing, workshop, purchasing, quality and event teams to ensure successful project delivery within demanding timescales.

  • Continuous Improvement:Identify and lead opportunities to improve component performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost efficiency across existing and future projects.

  • Project Delivery:Manage design workloads and priorities effectively, ensuring engineering projects are delivered to the required quality, specification and timescale.

Essential Criteria & Skills:
  • Engineering Qualification:BEng or MEng degree qualification in Motorsport Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Mechanical Design Experience:Significant experience designing mechanical components and assemblies within a high-performance engineering environment.

  • Technical Leadership:Experience taking technical ownership of engineering projects and providing guidance or support to other Engineers.

  • CAD & Design Skills:Strong proficiency using 3D CAD software to create complex models and detailed engineering drawings.

  • Manufacturing Knowledge:Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, assembly processes, materials and manufacturing methods.

  • Engineering Principles:Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals including GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing.

  • Attention to Detail:High levels of accuracy and attention to detail when producing engineering documentation.

  • Communication Skills:Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Problem Solving:A logical and analytical approach to troubleshooting and resolving engineering challenges.

  • Time Management:Proven ability to manage workloads effectively and deliver tasks to agreed deadlines.

  • IT Literacy:Competent user of Microsoft Office applications and engineering software packages.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience using CAD software preferably CATIA V5.

  • Previous experience within motorsport, automotive or another high-performance engineering environment.

  • Experience of mentoring or supporting the development of Junior Engineering colleagues.

  • Knowledge of composite materials, lightweight structures or vehicle systems would be advantageous.
