Job summary

M-Sport UK, based at Dovenby Hall, is seeking a proactive Junior Machinist to join the Machine Shop. You will support CNC machining, setup, tooling, and interpretation of technical drawings to produce high-quality components for motorsport programmes.

The role offers hands-on development under experienced machinists within a fast-paced workshop environment. You will work closely with Engineering, Design and Quality teams to ensure accuracy, repeatability and timely delivery of parts for

Qualifications

  • Education: Level 3 Machining Technician standard.
  • Machining knowledge: basic CNC, tooling and component manufacture.
  • Practical skills: good manual skills with machinery and engineering equipment.
  • Technical drawings: read and understand engineering drawings and specs.
  • Quality & accuracy: attention to detail, repeatability and quality.
  • Inspection & measurement: basic use of precision measuring equipment.
  • Problem solving: proactive, identifies issues and seeks help.
  • Communication: good spoken and written communication, team player.
  • Organisation: manage workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Safety: understands safe working practices in workshop.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with CNC machining to production specs and drawings.
  • Help with machine setup, tooling, and material preparation.
  • Develop understanding of tool offsets and cutting conditions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and specs to manufacture parts.
  • Ensure machining meets quality standards and procedures.
  • Carry out component inspection and report issues.
  • Develop machining knowledge through hands-on learning with experienced machinists.
  • Complete job cards and inspection records accurately and on time.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Design and Quality to deliver projects on schedule.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

Operating at the highest levels of international motorsport, M-Sport UK delivers programmes across the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally-Raid, and a variety of global customer racing activities. We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Junior Machinist to join our busy Machine Shop Department at our Dovenby Hall headquarters.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop your machining skills and play a key role in the manufacture and delivery of high-performance competition components, working as part of a skilled team of Machinists. Working closely with colleagues across Engineering, Design, Workshop, Quality Control and other technical departments, you will develop your technical knowledge and practical skills while ensuring components are manufactured to the required standards of quality and accuracy.

The role responsibilities include:
  • CNC Machining:Assist with the setting and operation of CNC machinery to manufacture components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Machine Setup:Assist with preparing machines, tooling, work holding and materials for production.

  • Tooling & Offsets:Develop an understanding of tooling, cutting conditions and tool offsets, making adjustments under appropriate guidance.

  • Technical Drawings:Develop the ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information to accurately manufacture components.

  • Quality & Standards:Ensure all machining work is completed to the required quality standards, specifications and procedures, maintaining a strong focus on accuracy and repeatability.

  • Inspection & Verification:Carry out inspection of components using relevant measuring equipment and report any issues to the appropriate team member.

  • Technical Development:Develop knowledge and understanding of machining processes, machinery, tooling and manufacturing techniques through practical experience and support from experienced Machinists.

  • Documentation:Complete relevant job cards, inspection records and technical paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration:Work closely with Engineering, Design, Workshop, Quality Control and other technical departments to ensure projects are delivered on time.

  • General Workshop Duties:Maintain high housekeeping standards and ensure machines, tooling, equipment and work areas are kept in a clean, safe and effective condition.

Essential Criteria & Skills:
  • Education:Educated to Level 3 Machining Technician standard.

  • Machining Knowledge:Basic understanding of machining principles, CNC machinery, tooling and component manufacture.

  • Practical Skills:Good practical and manual skills, with an enthusiasm for working with machinery, tools and engineering equipment.

  • Technical Drawings:Basic ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical information.

  • Quality & Attention to Detail:Strong attention to detail with an understanding of the importance of accuracy, repeatability and quality.

  • Inspection & Measurement:Basic understanding of precision measuring equipment and dimensional inspection.

  • Problem Solving:A proactive approach with the ability to identify issues and seek support to resolve machining and production problems.

  • Communication Skills:Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Organisation:Good organisational skills with the ability to manage workloads and meet agreed deadlines.

  • Safety Awareness:Good understanding of the importance of safe working practices within a workshop environment.

Preferred Experience:
  • Previous experience working within a machining, engineering, or motorsport environment.

  • Experience operating or assisting with CNC milling and/or turning equipment.
