Job summary

HMRC is seeking a Lead Developer to set the technical direction and ensure delivery of high-quality, scalable, and secure services. You will guide a fast-paced engineering team across the full service lifecycle, translating business needs into robust designs and prototypes.

You will lead low-level solution design for large-scale services, balancing strategic planning with hands-on validation through experiments and reference implementations.

Qualifications

• Proven ability to produce detailed designs for complex, secure and resilient Java services.
• Strong Java engineering background; challenge designs and validate implementations.
• Experience transforming high-level designs into low-level implementation designs for enterprise-scale microservices.
• Knowledge of cloud-native patterns and enterprise-scale architecture.
• Leads developers during advanced problem-solving in complex integrations.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy and direction to support scalable, secure services.
• Provide expert judgement and guide teams through high-risk technical issues.
• Act as design authority aligning implementations to enterprise architecture patterns.
• Oversee full build/run/improve lifecycle ensuring resilience and security.
• Lead on solution design and technical decision-making across teams.
