Job summary

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Digital Services is seeking an experienced developer to join an Agile Scrum Team supporting the Self Assessment digital service. You will design, build and maintain Java-based services used by over 12 million HMRC users, contributing to continuous improvement and production releases.

You will work within Chief Digital Product Office, collaborating with stakeholders, contractors and suppliers to deliver customer-centric digital services and rapid responses to

Qualifications

• Demonstrable experience using Java 8+ and Spring Framework for user‑centred services.
• DevOps experience with CI/CD, unit testing, TDD, Jenkins, and Git.
• Ability to plan and lead development on user stories and mentor juniors.
• Knowledge of OWASP top 10 and web security practices.
• Experience with observability tools and live service operations.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lead development activities supporting legislative changes, service enhancements, maintenance and problem resolution within strict timescales.
• Put users first, translating user needs and user stories into effective technical solutions.
• Develop and maintain deep knowledge of the wider service architecture and support the development of others.
• Operate and support the live services you build, using monitoring and observability tools.
• Contribute to deployment activities and take ownership of production releases.
• Proactively improve service resilience, stability, scalability and maintainability.
• Support and mentor less experienced developers within the team.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
