Senior Product Inspection Engineer
Location: Gillingham, UK

A globally renowned manufacturer of advanced components and systems for the automotive and industrial sectors is looking to appoint a Senior Product Inspection Engineer to join its high-precision engineering and development facility based in Kent.

With a legacy spanning more than a century, this organisation leads innovation in fuel and electrical systems across both OEM and aftermarket sectors. Their products are pivotal in reducing environmental impact and increasing energy efficiency in vehicles and machinery across the globe. Operating across more than 40 locations worldwide, they offer long-term career development and the opportunity to work on technically challenging, sustainability-focused projects.

The Role:
This is a key role within the Quality and Metrology function, where you'll lead dimensional and surface measurement activities in support of high-spec automotive product development. The work spans across design validation, method development, reporting, and quality improvement all within a high-precision, regulated engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform complex dimensional and surface finish inspections using microscopes, contact and optical metrology systems.
  • Generate detailed technical reports and communicate findings with engineering, quality, and design teams.
  • Lead the development of inspection methodologies and continuous improvement in measurement processes.
  • Drive innovation through the adoption of new metrology technologies and automation tools.
  • Supervise junior engineers, technicians, and student placements.
  • Oversee equipment calibration and contribute to EH&S and quality system conformance (IATF 16949).
  • Support departmental performance targets and quality metrics.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Degree in Engineering or related technical discipline, with at least 5 years experience in a metrology, inspection, or product validation environment.
  • A Master s in Precision Engineering or Metrology is highly desirable.
  • NPL Dimensional Measurement Certificates (Level 1 or 2) would be a plus.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional metrology principles, surface finish measurement, and measurement uncertainty.
  • Hands-on experience with manual and digital microscopes, contact and non-contact 3D metrology systems.
  • Competent in GD&T interpretation, 3D CAD software, and statistical techniques such as MSA and Gauge R&R.
  • Familiarity with diesel injection systems or similar precision mechanical assemblies would be beneficial.
  • Programming ability in Matlab, Python, or VBA, especially for inspection process automation or data analysis.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and mentoring skills.
