Job summary

Pearson Whiffin Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to join our IT team. You will own and develop the company's internal infrastructure, supporting Windows Server, Active Directory, Hyper-V and Microsoft 365 Hybrid environments.

Reporting to the Head of IT, you will lead infrastructure projects, drive security improvements and automate processes with PowerShell. You will also document systems and diagrams, acting as a senior escalation point for the IT service desk.

Qualifications

• 6–8+ years’ experience in IT infrastructure.
• Strong hands-on knowledge of Windows Server, AD, GPO and Hyper‑V.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 Hybrid, Intune, Azure Entra ID, networking, firewalls, backup and recovery, patch management and vulnerability remediation; comfortable with PowerShell automation.

Responsibilities

• Administer and maintain Windows Server, AD, GPO, alongside Hyper‑V, Microsoft 365 Hybrid, Azure/Entra ID and Intune.
• Lead server migrations, infrastructure upgrades and refresh projects; support SQL Server, IIS and Remote Desktop Services.
• Security focus: patching, vulnerability remediation, endpoint protection, firewall, VPN, backup and DR; contribute to Cyber Essentials Plus.
• Support network infrastructure, including switching, VLANs, WAN, and Sophos XGS firewalls; automate with PowerShell.
• Produce technical documentation and network diagrams; assist with infrastructure planning; act as senior escalation point for IT Service Desk.

Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to join a IT team playing a key role in supporting, maintaining and developing the companies internal technology infrastructure.

Reporting directly to the Head of IT, you'll work alongside other Infrastructure & M365 Engineers, taking ownership of infrastructure platforms, cybersecurity, automation and technical projects.

While you'll initially work closely with end users and the IT Service Desk to build a strong understanding of the environment, this is primarily an infrastructure-focused role. You'll act as an escalation point for complex technical issues and help drive continuous improvements across the IT estate.

What you'll be doing

• You'll administer and maintain our Windows Server, Active Directory and Group Policy environments, alongside Hyper-V, Microsoft 365 Hybrid, Azure/Entra ID and Intune.
• You'll take an active role in server migrations, infrastructure upgrades and refresh projects, as well as supporting SQL Server, IIS and Remote Desktop Services environments.
• Security will be a key part of your role. You'll help manage patching, vulnerability remediation, endpoint protection, firewall and VPN technologies, backup and disaster recovery solutions, and contribute to our ongoing Cyber Essentials Plus compliance.
• You'll also support our network infrastructure, including switching, VLANs, WAN connectivity and Sophos XGS firewalls, while using PowerShell and management tools to automate processes and improve efficiency.
• Alongside hands‑on technical work, you'll produce clear technical documentation and network diagrams, support infrastructure planning and act as a senior escalation point for the IT Service Desk.

What we're looking for

• You'll ideally have 6-8+ years' experience in IT infrastructure, with strong hands‑on knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy and Hyper-V.
• Experience across Microsoft 365 Hybrid environments, Intune, Azure/Entra ID, networking, firewalls, backup and recovery, patch management and vulnerability remediation is important. You should also be comfortable administering and automating environments using PowerShell.
• Experience supporting or migrating SQL Server, IIS and Remote Desktop Services would be particularly valuable.
• You'll be an excellent troubleshooter with a proactive approach, strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to both technical and non‑technical colleagues.
• Experience with Cyber Essentials Plus, Mimecast or Sophos XGS, together with relevant Microsoft, Azure, networking or security certifications, would be advantageous.
