Job summary

WSP is seeking an Associate Director / Associate to lead the Hydromorphology service line, focusing on watercourse Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and supporting WFD advisory work. This senior role sits within the Catchment Science team, guiding BNG delivery and a growing WFD advisory pipeline across the UK.

Qualifications

• Degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Ecology or similar.
• Professional membership (CIWEM, CIEEM, or RGS) ideally Chartered.
• River Condition Assessment accreditation.
• Strong track record delivering watercourse BNG and net gain strategies.
• Ability to integrate WFD, watercourse BNG, river restoration and nature-based solutions into coherent project strategies.
• Knowledge of HMMPs and long-term stewardship.
• Experience managing projects, programmes and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and technically review the Watercourse BNG Metric applications and River Condition Assessments.
• Lead and review Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance assessments.
• Provide senior technical support to the watercourse BNG team.
• Support business planning, sales, and bid development for watercourse BNG, WFD, and hydromorphology.
• Identify opportunities to expand watercourse BNG delivery pipelines.
• Oversee Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMPs) for long-term BNG security.
• Provide high-level technical direction on multidisciplinary projects with WFD and BNG.
• Advise on landowner engagement strategies for off-site BNG delivery.
