Job description

Senior HV Transient Specialist | High Voltage Studies, Insulation Coordination & Surge Analysis | UK

Are you an expert in high-voltage system behaviour, electromagnetic transients, and insulation coordination? Do you enjoy solving complex technical challenges that protect critical infrastructure and improve the reliability of modern power systems?

Nexos Group is seeking a Senior HV Transient Specialist to become our leading Subject Matter Expert for high-voltage transient analysis and insulation coordination across industrial, commercial, and microgrid projects.

This is a highly influential technical consultancy role where you'll work at the forefront of project development, supporting clients and engineering teams during the pre-FEED and FEED phases. You'll assess switching surges, lightning impacts, and transient overvoltages, ensuring that critical electrical infrastructure is designed to operate safely, reliably, and in full compliance with industry standards.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Acting as Nexos Group's technical authority for electromagnetic transients, insulation coordination, and surge protection
  • Leading transient analysis and dynamic modelling activities during pre-FEED and FEED studies
  • Performing complex switching surge studies, transformer energisation assessments, cable charging current analysis, and lightning surge modelling
  • Assessing transient risks across industrial facilities, microgrids, substations, and power distribution networks
  • Developing insulation coordination strategies and defining equipment withstand requirements
  • Specifying surge arresters, insulation levels, clearances, and protection measures to safeguard HV assets
  • Supporting business development activities by identifying transient risks and validating technical solutions during tenders and proposals
  • Collaborating closely with power systems engineers, transformer specialists, and project delivery teams to ensure equipment specifications are aligned with calculated transient stresses
  • Ensuring all studies and recommendations comply with relevant BS, IEC and IEEE standards, including insulation coordination best practices
What We're Looking For
  • Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, High Voltage Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience)
  • 5+ years' experience specialising in HV transient analysis, insulation coordination, surge protection, or power system studies
  • Strong practical experience using industry-standard simulation tools such as PSCAD, EMTP-RV, ATP-EMTP or equivalent electromagnetic transient software
  • Detailed understanding of switching transients, lightning phenomena, transformer inrush, resonance, cable energisation, and surge propagation
  • Experience working with HV equipment including transformers, reactors, GIS/AIS switchgear, underground cable systems, and industrial power networks
  • Strong knowledge of insulation coordination principles, surge arresters, dielectric withstand requirements, and overvoltage protection strategies
  • Familiarity with applicable BS, IEC and IEEE standards, including insulation coordination and high-voltage testing requirements
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills, with the ability to translate highly complex technical studies into practical engineering recommendations
Why Join Nexos Group?

This is a unique opportunity to become the recognised technical authority for one of the most specialised disciplines within electrical engineering. You'll support cutting‑edge projects spanning renewable energy, microgrids, industrial electrification, battery storage, and critical infrastructure, helping clients de‑risk investments and protect valuable assets.

You'll remain deeply involved in the technical work while influencing major engineering decisions from concept development through to detailed design.
