Job summary

Matchtech is seeking a Senior Primary Engineer in Scotland to deliver high‑voltage substation design across transmission, distribution and renewables. You will lead primary engineering deliverables from 11kV to 400kV, with emphasis on AIS/GIS, 132kV+ projects and FEED stage consultancy.

Requires a degree in electrical engineering and substantial experience in substation design for T&D or BESS. UK standards, National Grid guidance, and Safety by Design principles apply.

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification in electrical engineering or closely related discipline.
• Significant experience in substation primary engineering within Transmission and Distribution, renewable energy or BESS projects.
• Strong technical knowledge of 275kV and 400kV substation design, with AIS/GIS experience.
• Practical understanding of UK transmission projects and National Grid specs; experience with SSEN or SPEN advantageous.
• Knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and CDM Regulations in the electricity supply industry.
• Experience with electrical design tools and standard engineering practices; professional membership desirable.

Responsibilities

• Act as a senior technical lead for primary engineering deliverables for substations from 11kV to 400kV, focusing on 132kV+.
• Prepare proposals, scopes, execution plans, estimates, schedules, and detailed designs.
• Develop layouts and documents for AIS and GIS, including land use, elevations, conduit layouts, earthing, lighting, protection, BOMs and calculations.
• Undertake busbar sizing, sag/tension, and short-circuit analyses for bus arrangements.
• Coordinate design activities with civil/structural, networks and line teams; conduct design reviews with clients.
• Produce technical reports, FEED deliverables and ensure compliance with IEC/IEEE and UK requirements.
• Monitor progress, perform technical checks, support multiple project teams and ensure timely submissions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring; promote Safety by Design and drive process/tool improvements.
