Job summary

AECOM in the United Kingdom is seeking a Principal Cable System Design Engineer to lead HV/EHV cable system design within our Transmission & Distribution team. The role drives technical excellence, manages complex projects, and guides strategic client engagement across high‑voltage schemes.

You will coordinate civil, OHL, substation, and marine inputs, champion innovation, and mentor the wider team while ensuring compliance with National Grid TPs, IEC, and CIGRÉ standards.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated technical leadership in HV/EHV cable system design.
• Proven ability to lead design across tunnel, urban, and constrained environments.
• Strong understanding of international and UK standards (National Grid TPs, IEC, CIGRÉ).
• Experience with regulated, quality-assured environments and senior stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of large HV/EHV cable projects from concept to completion.
• Oversee routing, burial risk, thermal, EMC, and mechanical modelling for HV cables.
• Input into ratings, installation methods, jointing, cleating, and integration.
• Validate ampacity, short-circuit, EMC, and thermomechanical calculations to standards.
• Engage clients and provide technical assurance and strategic solutions.
• Coordinate between civil, structural, OHL, substation, and marine disciplines.
• Drive project execution, manage risks, interfaces, and quality reviews.
• Oversee 3rd-party inspections, FAT/SAT, and vendor oversight.
• Mentor and develop the cable systems team and share knowledge.
• Support proposals, bid reviews, and client presentations.
