Our team at Ultra I&C Communications is seeking an experienced Hardware Engineer specializing in Satcom and Troposcatter technologies.
At Ultra I&C, you will operate in a dynamic environment, with a strong focus on R&D investment and product expansion.
Joining a small team, you will have significant control and input, steering product direction with support from the larger organization.
As a Senior Hardware Engineer, your responsibilities will include designing satellite communications hardware from concept through to detailed design and testing.
Scope:
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will work closely with a team of up to 8 in the UK and occasionally collaborate with the larger team in Montreal.
Projects will vary from small customization tasks to large new product developments, with durations from days to 6-9 months.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design printed circuit boards with analog and digital components
- Develop firmware to support hardware development
- Provide technical support to production and engineering teams
- Participate in electronic design reviews and provide feedback
- Develop and execute test plans for analog and digital boards
- Debug complex hardware issues
- Perform requirements analysis and derivation from system to firmware levels
- Assist with integration activities of hardware and software
- Propose improvements in tools, processes, and techniques to enhance quality and innovation
- Contribute to project goals balancing requirements, schedule, and costs
- Support customer meetings through documentation and presentations
- Estimate effort and timelines for hardware and firmware tasks
- Review technical proposals and assist in bid and proposal efforts
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Design of digital and analog circuits
- Analog simulation experience
- Embedded firmware development in C/C++, assembly, debugging, emulation, and simulation
- Experience with processor platforms like Microchip/Atmel, ARM, Renesas, Freescale
- VHDL for FPGA development
- Embedded PC module integration
- Design using AMD Xilinx and Intel Altera devices
- Experience with serial communications like Ethernet, USB, PCIe
- Knowledge of protocols such as USB, UART, I2C, SPI
- Understanding of microcontroller start-up processes
- Knowledge of EMC standards and design principles
- Military standards knowledge is advantageous
- Familiarity with FCC, EN, IEC standards
- System power budgeting
- PCB design constraints (impedances, current, stackup)
- Proficiency with CADStar or similar PCB design tools
- FPGA module design and testing experience
- Ability to interpret hardware schematics
- Experience with version control, change management, bug tracking systems
- Understanding of firmware development lifecycle and best practices
- Knowledge of AC-DC and DC-DC converters
Qualifications:
- Degree in Electronics Engineering, science-based subject, or equivalent experience
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Ability to obtain SC Security Clearance
