Job Description

Costain's multi-discipline engineering and design team deliver design mainly across Costain projects. The design outputs range from studies to detailed design for permanent and temporary works. This team focuses on delivering sustainable, safe-by-design outputs with a strong constructability ethos.

As we expand our presence in the water sector, partnering with UK water companies to deliver their strategic capital programmes for the AMP8 investment cycles, we have an opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing team supporting Southern Water, Northumbrian Water, and United Utilities Frameworks.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering key design elements on water projects, including 3D design, calculations, scope of works, and specifications in the wastewater environment. Responsibilities include design delivery, resource management, prioritising work, supporting team members, and ensuring quality output.

This role involves site visits to construction sites, partners, clients, and suppliers as needed. Work will be based at Costain Offices at Aviator Way, Manchester, approximately 2-3 days a week, with flexible and home working options to support wellbeing.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with Company & Client policies related to water sector requirements.
• Complete specific design tasks delegated by the Project Discipline Engineer or Engineering Manager.
• Deliver work packs in a timely and cost-effective manner, aligned with project requirements and standards. Select team members through the SQEP process for task forces.
• Maintain Quality Assurance, auditable records, and technical files in accordance with CDM requirements.
• Coordinate effectively with other partners and disciplines as required.

Essential Requirements

You will be a Senior Mechanical Engineer - Water with specific knowledge and experience in your discipline (i.e., SQEP'd - Suitably Qualified Experienced Person).

• Experience leading mechanical engineering roles on projects or groups of projects, supporting the development of fellow engineers.
• Proven significant experience in your discipline or a related field.
• Proficiency in delivering engineering design across various work categories.

Experience in one or more of the following specialist fields:

• Water treatment
• Wastewater treatment
• Biosolids/sludge treatment
• Pumping systems
• Chemical storage and dosing
• Asset condition surveys and reports

Experience with deliverables such as:

• Process Flow Diagrams
• Plant Layout
• Equipment Specifications and Datasheets
• Pumping system calculations

Qualifications

Essential

• An appropriate Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent in engineering or related discipline.

Desirable

• Chartered Mechanical Engineer
