Job summary

Filtronic in Cambridge is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop and integrate embedded software for RF and communications products. You will work across the full product lifecycle with emphasis on Zephyr-based development, embedded Linux, Yocto, bare-metal firmware, and secure communications.

You will collaborate with RF, FPGA, hardware and systems engineers to deliver reliable data and control interfaces, contribute to product security and performance, and help drive

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in low-level embedded software and firmware development.
• Proficiency with Zephyr real-time OS is mandatory.
• Experience with prototype board bring-up and HW/SW integration.
• Ability to read schematics and component datasheets.
• Strong C/C++ skills for resource-constrained environments.
• Experience with digital interfaces: CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, RS422.
• Strong debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debugging tools.
• Experience with ARM Cortex-M and Cortex-A, especially STM32.
• Knowledge of Yocto, PetaLinux or similar embedded Linux build systems.
• Understanding Linux kernel architecture, drivers, bootloaders, and systemd.
• Familiarity with security, including TLS, SSH, IPSec, HTTPS, secure boot and secure firmware updates.
• Knowledge of MISRA or similar high-reliability standards.
• Experience with Linux automation, CI/CD and automated testing.
• Familiarity with container tech like Docker or Kubernetes.
• Ability to obtain SC security clearance where required.
• Experience with RF systems is a plus.
• Python development basics.

Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, integrate and support embedded software across products and subsystems.
• Develop and maintain Zephyr-based firmware and bare-metal code.
• Build and maintain embedded Linux platforms (Yocto-based).
• Prototype board bring-up and hardware/software integration.
• Design board-to-board interfaces and digital communication (CAN/SPI/I2C/UART/RS422).
• Develop networking services, REST APIs and SNMP/OpenAPI components.
• Implement secure communications and firmware update mechanisms.
• Lead debugging, root-cause analysis for networking/security issues.
• Create embedded software requirements, interfaces and technical docs.
• Collaborate with hardware, FPGA and systems teams to ensure reliable interfaces.
