Job summary

King & Moffatt Building Services is seeking a senior electrical safety lead to oversee the Safe System of Work for LV projects. You will lead Authorised Persons, manage permits, and ensure robust electrical safety across on-site operations.

The role requires extensive LV experience, a recognised electrical qualification, and strong leadership capabilities to mentor teams and drive a culture of safety and compliance throughout projects across sectors in the UK.

Qualifications

• Recognised Electrical Qualification at NVQ 3 or equivalent.
• Current or previous AP role or capability to operate at Senior AP level.
• Experience with LV electrical distribution in commercial/industrial/data centre environments.
• Extensive experience with Permit to Work and Sanction to Test systems.
• Knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations and BS7671.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and coordinate Authorised Persons (LV) across the project.
• Ensure consistent application of Electrical Safety Rules and Procedures.
• Act as the senior point of contact for LV electrical safety matters.
• Promote a strong culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee the management of Permits to Work, Sanctions to Test, Standing Instructions, and Authorities for Access.
• Prepare and approve Safety Programmes for complex high-risk electrical activities.
• Coordinate live permits and electrical works to prevent conflicts and ensure safe execution.
• Authorise electrical work, testing, switching, and energisation activities.
• Manage electrical isolation, proving dead, lock-off, and earthing activities.
• Control LV energisation/de-energisation operations; ensure proper documentation.
• Ensure installations are inspected, tested, and approved before energisation.
• Maintain accurate switching records and operating documentation.
• Conduct audits/reviews of electrical safety documentation and site practices.
• Lead investigations into electrical incidents and near-misses; support audits and corrective actions.
• Mentor APs, AP Designates, and Skilled Persons; assess competence and training needs.
• Support succession planning and ongoing development of electrical safety personnel.

Job Description

This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the electrical Safe System of Work, managing a team of Authorised Persons (LV), controlling electrical permits and switching activities, and ensuring the highest standards of electrical safety are maintained across site operations. The role acts as the senior site representative for LV electrical safety and works closely with the Authorising Engineer, project delivery teams, commissioning managers, and client stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Safety Leadership

• Lead, coach, and coordinate Authorised Persons (LV) across the project.
• Ensure consistent application of Electrical Safety Rules and Procedures.

Permit to Work & Electrical Control

• Oversee the management of Permits to Work, Sanctions to Test, Standing Instructions, and Authorities for Access.

Isolation, Switching & Energisation

• Manage electrical isolation, proving dead, lock-off, and earthing activities.
• Control all LV energisation and de-energisation operations.
• Ensure installations are fully inspected, tested, and approved before energisation.
• Maintain accurate switching records and operating documentation.

Compliance & Audits

• Conduct audits and reviews of electrical safety documentation and site practices.
• Ensure compliance with company procedures and statutory regulations.
• Lead investigations into electrical incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences.
• Support internal and external safety audits and implement corrective actions.

People Development

• Mentor and develop Authorised Persons, AP Designates, and Skilled Persons.
• Assess competence and identify training requirements.
• Support succession planning and ongoing development of electrical safety personnel.

Qualifications

• Recognised Electrical Qualification (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds 2360/2365/5357 or equivalent).
• Current or previous appointment as an Electrical Authorised Person, or demonstrable capability to operate at Senior AP level.
• Strong experience working on LV electrical distribution systems within commercial, industrial, data centre, pharmaceutical, or building services environments.
• Extensive experience operating Permit to Work and Sanction to Test systems.
• Strong knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations, BS7671, and electrical safe systems of work.
• Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and switching schedules.
• Proven leadership experience managing electrical teams and safety processes.
• Excellent communication, planning, and decision-making skills.
• HV Switching Experience or HV Authorised Person status.
• HNC, HND, or Degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services.
• SMSTS, SSSTS, and CSCS certification.
• Data Centre, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Healthcare, Defence, or Critical Infrastructure project experience.
• Membership of the IET or equivalent professional institution.
