Job summary

Pearson Carter is sourcing a Senior DevOps and System Engineer for a fully remote role with a Scotland office. You will own AWS-based production platforms, manage Linux environments, and drive automation and IaC using Terraform and Ansible.

The role demands strong incident management, monitoring, and on-call readiness. You will collaborate with development teams to optimise performance, security, and reliability across systems and CI/CD pipelines, including Bitbucket Pipelines.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience in Systems Engineering or DevOps roles.
• Strong Linux production environments experience.
• Hands-on AWS knowledge including EC2, VPC and load balancing.
• Familiarity with nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
• Infrastructure as code experience with Terraform in production.
• Experience with Ansible for automated configuration and provisioning.
• Scripting and automation using Python and Bash.

Responsibilities

• Own and manage AWS estate ensuring secure, stable, scalable infrastructure.
• Maintain Linux-based production systems and address performance or availability issues.
• Support and enhance infrastructure and application tech such as nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
• Manage CDN/WAF services with Akamai and Cloudflare.
• Develop and standardise IaC with Terraform.
• Automate configuration and provisioning with Ansible.
• Improve deployment pipelines using Bitbucket Pipelines.
• Monitor and alert using Zabbix, CloudWatch, Pingdom, New Relic.
• Lead major incidents and implement long-term fixes.
• Automate repetitive operational tasks; build tooling with Python and Bash.
• Collaborate across teams to improve security, resilience, and performance.
• Contribute to infrastructure standards and practices.
• Participate in 24/7 on-call rota.
