Job summary

A leading engineering consultancy is looking for a Senior/Principal Communications Engineer in Birmingham on a 6 month contract. The role includes managing project performance, client interaction, and technical responsibility in building services design. Ideal candidates will have a degree in a relevant field and extensive experience in multiple sectors such as Nuclear and Defence. A hybrid work model requires 2 days in the office weekly.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a Communications, Electronic Engineering, or ICT related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership.
  • Experience working on projects in Nuclear, Defence, Infrastructure, Government, and Transportation sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project performance to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Prepare design documentation and communications drawings.
  • Lead communication design teams and ensure technical responsibility.

Skills

Extensive design experience in construction or transportation sectors
Good understanding of IP data networking

Overview

Our client is looking for an experienced, motivated Senior/Principal Communications Engineer looking to develop their career in a positive environment and join our team where talent is encouraged and growth opportunities unrivalled.

Our client has a requirement for a Senior/Principal Communications Engineer, who will be required to work on a 6 month contract basis in Birmingham.

Hybrid - 2 days are required in the office per week

SC clearance required – can start on BPSS.

Role Purpose

The opportunity will require candidates to be client-facing as well as being involved in the day-to-day design and management of projects. It is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communications engineer to further develop their career within a leading building design consultancy. This role will allow development of existing technical skills as well as providing potential to expand digital and project management skills.

Job Role Responsibilities
  • Commercially aware and capable of identifying internal and external project opportunities.
  • Takes commercial responsibility for the delivery of the Building Services team engaged on projects.
  • Project Cost Control.
People
  • Generates good working relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Manages project performance to ensure customers receive a good service.
  • Provides management, motivation, inspiration and leadership for the Building Services team engaged on projects.
  • Recognises and develops talent in others; leads by example.
  • Can identify and nurture talent in others to maintain a high performing and technically sound project team.
Technical
  • Ensuring an understanding of project briefs.
  • Preparation of design documentation for communications systems, including report writing to company standards.
  • Preparation of communications drawings and schematics for drafting by the BIM team.
  • Assumes technical responsibility and operational accountability for Building Services team output on projects.
  • Familiar with relevant industry standards and guidelines.
  • Comfortable in communicating and challenging other design team members to arrive at the optimum Building Services design solution.
  • Has an engineering design background and able to fully demonstrate an ability to design and lead Communications design teams.
  • Extensive design experience in the construction or transportation sectors.
  • Able to demonstrate a full understanding of the key Building Services design considerations when working on projects.
Business Development
  • Produces and implements discipline tactical marketing plans and ensure monthly business activities are undertaken regularly.
  • Customer focused, and builds, maintains, and nurtures a high-profile client base.
Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification in a Communications, Electronic Engineering, or ICT related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or be working towards Chartership.
  • Experience working on projects across a number of focus markets (Nuclear, Defence, Infrastructure, Government, and Transportation).
  • Experience of designing building systems including: Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Access Control Systems (ACS)
  • Experience of designing Public Address Voice Alarm (PAVA) systems
  • Experience of designing structured cabling systems, including copper and fibre optic systems and the associated physical network infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of IP data networking, systems design, and the associated active and passive network infrastructure.
  • Some understanding of AV systems design.
  • A background of working in engineering consultancy, including an understanding of RIBA / BSRIA design stages, working as part of a wider multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Experience of attending site and monitoring works, including familiarity with the installation and commissioning stages of the project for communications systems and their supporting ancillaries (such as containment, power).
  • Ability to manage packages of work, taking charge of their own deliverables and the deliverables of others to successfully meet project deadlines.
  • Excellent report writing ability, with experience of writing specifications of varying detail to align with the requirements of the RIBA stages.
  • Experience of working in a client-facing role, presenting their designs and leading discussions on behalf of the communications discipline.
  • Able to act on their own initiative, solving problems on projects and building relationships across the wider team and practice.
  • Experience of digital engineering technologies / Building Information Management (BIM), the ability to use key software packages such as Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD would be desirable.
