Senior Commercial Manager - Utilities

Location: Yorkshire - Hybrid

Salary: Up to £65K DOE

Job Summary

Our client is a leading provider of infrastructure within the multi-utilities sector, with multiple offices across the UK and over 200 specialists. Established for over 50 years, they focus on energy connections and utility infrastructure, operating nationally with a direct delivery model. They are committed to the UK's zero carbon and smart energy revolution.

About The Role

As a Senior Commercial Manager, you will manage an assistant QS and other Commercial Managers in the team.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage the Commercial Team's standardized methodology to maintain project margins compared to budgets and report variances for action.
  2. Lead management of MU Major Projects and complex novated Clancy projects.
  3. Review non-standard contractual terms before signing to ensure operational delivery aspects protect the business.
  4. Instigate commercial procedures and training for SGN and Cadent contracts, including building a schedule of rates for variations.
  5. Ensure project billings and variations are up to date, with timely proposals to customers, leveraging contract T&Cs.
  6. Review price variations (RPI) and water infrastructure recharges, embedding these into BAU processes.
  7. Oversee project cashflows, ensuring projects remain cash positive, with oversight from Commercial Managers.
  8. Support and mentor Commercial Managers, sharing industry knowledge.
  9. Ensure training and development within the Commercial/QS Teams.
  10. Collaborate with Operations and Finance to hold Project Managers/Engineers accountable for project margins.
  11. Ensure all activities comply with health and safety policies.
  12. Maintain consistency across the Commercial Team’s activities and processes.
  13. Conduct final project checks before handover to PEs, including establishing clear inclusion/exclusion procedures.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to manage multiple requirements effectively, prioritizing workload.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the utilities industry, providing industry advice.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a commercial manager or similar role in a related industry.
  • Proven experience managing commercial contracts and maximizing project profitability.
  • Track record of managing and developing teams.
  • Knowledge of Standard Forms of Agreement (JCT, NEC, FIDIC).
  • Experience with financial project margin and cashflow forecasting.
Qualifications/Accreditations

MACostE certification and experience with AX system are desirable.
