Job description

Due to our continued success in winning work, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Operational SHEQ Manager to join us across the UK. You will assist in managing safety, health, environmental, and quality matters within OCU Energy and the wider OCU Group by providing professional advice and solutions, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements and best practices.

This broad role involves responsibilities across various OCU Energy business units, including (but not limited to) OCU Hornbill, OCU Integrum, OCU Modus, OCU Trenchless, OCU Evolution, and OCU Energy Major Projects.

The role requires sustained engagement with personnel at all levels within the business units. You will develop (where needed) and implement SHEQ best practices, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory provisions, OCU Group requirements, and applicable codes of practice and guidance. You will work proactively with management to establish and maintain a safe system of work and a safe environment for all employees and third parties involved with OCU Group.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Act as the principal SHEQ contact for assigned business units (both internal and external).
  2. Engage with stakeholders, manage team resources, support project lifecycle from pre-tender to post-construction, and facilitate growth and reporting.
  3. Foster positive relationships with key stakeholders.
  4. Collaborate with management for early project engagement, including during mobilization, construction, and post-construction phases.
  5. Identify SHEQ resource needs, source candidates, and oversee onboarding.
  6. Manage SHEQ personnel and liaise with Group SHEQ support, ensuring performance standards are met.
  7. Support pre-qualification questionnaires and tender submissions.
  8. Provide visible leadership, promote the OCU brand, and endorse core Group requirements.
  9. Advise on SHEQ programs and implement effective mechanisms.
  10. Support retention of ISO and other relevant accreditations.
  11. Interpret and implement Group policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.

Skills and Requirements:

  • NCRQ Level 6 / NVQ Level 6 / NEBOSH Diploma
  • Proven experience as a Senior SHEQ leader in the utilities sector (Power Sector preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working within live substations
  • Experience with management systems and NERS accreditation (preferred)
  • Experience working with/for DNO/IDNOs
  • EUSR or CSCS certification in health and safety
  • Proficiency in accident/incident investigation, including RCA
  • Ability to compile documented information and data effectively
