Job summary

A regional healthcare organization is seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Peterborough City Hospital. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in surgery, lead teams, and develop professional skills within a supportive environment. Candidates should be Year 5/6 trainees with a passion for surgery and leadership. The fellowship lasts for 3 months with a chance for extension. Comprehensive training and a supportive team are provided.

Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic and pro-active individuals with management experience.
  • Desirable: existing JAG accreditation.

  • Attend training in laparoscopic and general colorectal surgery.

  • Manage colorectal unit administration.
  • Produce at least one publication within the fellowship.

Job description
Overview

FIXED TERM CONTRACT 3 MONTHS – EXTENSION. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in laparoscopic colorectal surgery based in the colorectal unit at Peterborough City Hospital. This fellowship is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and is listed on the National Fellowship Scheme’s list of approved fellowships. Peterborough City Hospital (PCH) is a new hospital, having received patients since 2010. The unit has six colorectal surgery consultants, most of whom are fellowship trained and well‑experienced. We manage roughly 225 colorectal cancers per year, the majority of the resections being conducted laparoscopically. The post does not have an on‑call commitment.

Salary is paid at the appropriate speciality trainee scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend training in laparoscopic and general colorectal surgery, and in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.
  • Perform 2–4 laparoscopic resections per week, and participate in open cases, redo resections and emergency colorectal surgery joint cases as required.
  • Develop competence in laparoscopic colonic resections and introductory laparoscopic TME.
  • Possess JAG accreditation to allow independent endoscopy lists where possible.
  • Engage in additional surgical procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomies and hernia repairs.
  • Manage colorectal unit administration, including rota organisation, junior staff oversight and database management.
  • Oversee the local Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme.
  • Produce at least one publication within the six‑month fellowship period.
Qualifications
  • Year 5/6 trainees, preferably having passed CCT/CESR.
  • Peri‑CCT/CESR candidate who is keen, enthusiastic and demonstrates leadership skills in addition to surgical ability.
  • Pro‑active individuals with management or leadership experience.
  • Desirable: existing JAG accreditation.

  • 1 clinic session
  • 1–2 endoscopy lists
  • 4 theatre sessions (flexible)
  • 1 research/audit session
  • MDT attendance (mandatory)
