Job summary

Arup is seeking a Consultant to join its protective design engineering team in London or Manchester. You will focus on sustainable development across markets, delivering blast engineering, hostile vehicle mitigation and threat-informed design from concept through detailed design to construction.

The role requires a Masters in civil/structural engineering, UK Security Clearance (or eligibility) and experience with structural analysis software, Rhino/Grasshopper and Eurocodes/BS standards.

Qualifications

• Masters degree in civil/structural engineering with a strong track record in mainstream structural engineering design.
• UK Security Clearance (or eligibility to apply).
• Experience in designing structures in steel, reinforced concrete, timber and/or masonry per British Standards and Eurocodes.
• Experience using structural analysis software packages.
• Ability to use Rhino/Grasshopper.
• Understanding of construction methodologies and buildability considerations.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines.
• Right to work in the UK for duration of employment.

Responsibilities

• Utilise your knowledge of mainstream structural engineering design and develop understanding of modelling structures against transient dynamic loading.
• Provide technical input across resilience, security and risk projects.
• Support threat and vulnerability risk assessments for malicious threats (including terrorism and civil disruption).
• Develop coherent, risk-based security strategies and integrate protective design and/or blast engineering measures from concept through detailed design to construction.
• Carry out blast modelling using engineering software including CFD and finite element methods.
• Undertake structural blast engineering design for diverse structures and façade systems.
• Undertake Hostile Vehicle Mitigation design as part of protective design strategies.
• Communicate concepts of threat, risk and mitigation with threat specialists; develop conceptual ideas and multi-disciplinary design collaboration.
• Manage detailed analysis, design and specification of structures and façades subject to blast loads.
