Job summary

EMBL-EBI on the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton seeks a Bioinformatics Software Engineer & Scientific Lead to shape the strategy and long-term sustainability of Job Dispatcher and other software products. You will merge hands-on development with scientific leadership to deliver reliable services used by researchers worldwide.

You will work with scientists, engineers and infrastructure specialists to drive roadmaps, prioritise work and ensure services remain scientifically relevant and scalable

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent professional experience in bioinformatics, computational biology or CS.
• Professional bioinformatics software development experience with RESTful APIs.
• Strong Java, TypeScript/JavaScript and Python programming skills.
• Experience building modern web apps with Angular or similar.
• Familiarity with Nextflow, SLURM and HPC environments.
• Experience packaging tools with Docker and Singularity/Apptainer.
• Git-based version control, CI/CD, Linux, scripting and operations.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of production bioinformatics services and scientific software.
• Shape product strategy and long-term roadmaps for Job Dispatcher.
• Provide specialist bioinformatics direction aligning with user needs.
• Prioritize backlog and coordinate delivery across teams.
• Coordinate service updates with ITS service teams.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers and infrastructure teams.
• Provide technical leadership and promote knowledge sharing.
