Job summary

EMBL-EBI’s ITS Service and Operations team invites a Bioinformatics Software Engineer & Scientific Lead to shape the strategy and long-term sustainability of Job Dispatcher and other core software.

You will combine hands-on software development with scientific leadership, collaborating with scientists, engineers and infrastructure specialists to deliver reliable, scalable services for the global bioinformatics community.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent experience in bioinformatics, computational biology or computer science.
• Professional bioinformatics or software engineering experience applying software to scientific applications.
• Strong programming in Java, TypeScript/JavaScript and Python.
• Experience building modern web apps with Angular.
• Familiarity with scientific workflow tools and HPC environments (Nextflow, SLURM).
• Experience packaging tools with containers (Docker, Singularity/Apptainer).
• Git-based version control, GitLab, CI/CD, and production Ops.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of production bioinformatics services and scientific software.
• Shape product strategy and define roadmaps with leadership.
• Provide bioinformatics expertise to keep services scientifically relevant.
• Manage backlog, priorities, dependencies and risks.
• Coordinate data updates for Job Dispatcher and related tools.
• Collaborate across scientists, engineers and infrastructure teams.
• Represent services in tools committees and support modernization.
• Share knowledge through training, presentations and publications.
