Job summary

GitLab is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build and own secure, scalable integrations that connect external tools with our platform. You’ll work on the External Agents team, shaping AI-powered features and APIs across the backend stack.

You'll design robust GraphQL and REST interfaces, optimize performance, and collaborate with product and AI specialists across time zones. This is a remote, high-impact role with visibility across the company.

Qualifications

• Production Ruby on Rails apps experience.
• REST/GraphQL API design with scalability.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL skills.
• Ability to work asynchronously in distributed teams.
• Experience shipping AI-powered backend features is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop, ship, and maintain secure, well-tested external agent integrations across the monolith backend.
• Collaborate with product, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements.
• Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs with clear contracts for frontend clients.
• Improve automated testing (RSpec) to strengthen quality and feedback loops.
• Share standards and patterns to support responsible AI integration across the team.
• Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations and troubleshoot production issues.
