Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby) for the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. This is a full-time, remote role with work location: UK, focusing on Ruby on Rails, Python, GraphQL, PostgreSQL and related backend systems.

You’ll own end-to-end backend features, collaborate with designers and product managers, and mentor peers in an all-remote, async-first environment. Expect high visibility and impactful, release-ready work.

Qualifications

• Experience designing backend systems with scalable APIs.
• Strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and Python in production.
• Familiarity with GraphQL, PostgreSQL, and modern backend stacks.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from concept to release in a distributed, async team.
• Build and maintain flows, APIs, data models, and evaluation components behind agent work items.
• Design and benchmark systems for workflow quality and cost efficiency.
• Collaborate with product and design partners; communicate trade-offs clearly.
• Mentor engineers and influence technical direction across Plan initiatives.
