GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. You’ll help build GitLab’s intent-to-code loop using Ruby on Rails, Python, and large language model interfaces, delivering high-visibility features from concept to release in a distributed, all-remote team.

You will mentor peers, shape scope with product and users, and influence technical decisions across agent workflows. This role emphasizes end-to-end ownership and collaboration across regions.

Qualifications

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase.
• Experience driving substantial projects with several engineers over multiple months.
• Product-minded with end-to-end ownership, scope shaping, and adoption learning.
• Full-stack background with backend focus and API design
• Experience exploring AI-assisted development.
• Ability to work independently and mentor others.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through design and rollout.
• Build flows, APIs, data models for agent-generated work items and plans.
• Develop evaluation systems for workflow quality and cost.
• Use Ruby on Rails and Python to build reliable production systems (PostgreSQL, GraphQL).
• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, users to shape scope and trade-offs.
• Coordinate multi-person projects in an all-remote environment.
• Mentor engineers and influence technical direction.
