Job summary

GitLab is hiring an Intermediate Backend Engineer to take backend features from idea to production, collaborating with Product, Frontend, Infra, and Security to ensure quality and security. You will work in a remote, asynchronous environment with experienced engineers reviewing and guiding your work.

You will implement and ship backend features using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages, design APIs, and ensure maintainability, performance, and observability across services.

Qualifications

• Producing production-ready backend applications with strong programming and API skills.
• Ability to learn and adapt across languages and platforms.
• Ownership of features from clarification to delivery and follow-up.
• Sound judgment on security, reliability, and performance.
• Clear written communication for remote, asynchronous teams.
• Practical experience using AI coding tools and reviewing outputs.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and ship backend features with minimal guidance.
• Build production-grade APIs, jobs, and services with secure, observable code.
• Increase automated coverage and review peers’ work for quality and security.
• Troubleshoot build, test, deploy, and runtime issues and address on-call tasks.
• Leverage AI carefully to improve productivity while validating results.
